Political Cartoons, Posters & Document Images
[Library of Congress]
British World War I poster, produced by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1917. Depicting soldiers on the war front and civilians on the home front, the poster was typical of British propaganda that focused on government efforts to increase citizen participation and patriotism.
During World War I, citizens were encouraged to help the war effort in whatever way they could. This is known as a "total war"—a war that, in addition to military actions, utilizes the efforts and resources of entire nations at home and abroad, focusing all of their productive energies on the complete destruction of their enemies.
