Primary Sources for the Classroom

Whether they realize it or not, students' everyday lives have been shaped by the powerful forces of globalization, from the clothes they wear to the electronics they use to the food they eat. Like all of us, students live in a globalized and interconnected world, yet they often have little understanding of the economic principles and issues underpinning the phenomenon of globalization. These primary sources can be used in the classroom to deepen students' understanding of globalization, especially as it impacts and is impacted by the United States.

This report, written in 2012 by the Congressional Research Service, outlines the fundamentals of U.S. trade policy and issues. It highlights how being a major player in the global economy has affected American economic interests, both positively and negatively.

There are a number of multinational organizations currently in operation, many of which focus, at least in part, on the economic and trade interests of the member countries. This table provides a concise overview of some of the most important supranational organizations and emphasizes the globalized nature of the world today.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) became the successor to the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). It serves as an excellent example of how globalization requires countries to work together, even though each individual nation may not get exactly what it wants in such economic deals.
