Impacts of Globalization [2:30]
TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to our discussion of globalization. This collection of resources was curated to cover the breadth of the complicated subject, globalization. It includes resources that address the familiar areas, but also some concepts you might not have associated with globalization before. As a business and economic geographer, I'm intrigued by globalization. It is literally the collision of economics with those where questions that geographers like to ask. Within this collection, you're going to find the topics that we typically associate with globalization: trade deals, who are globalization's winners and who are globalization's losers? But there's also some new ideas, some areas you might not have considered. What are the consequences of globalization of mental health? What are the implications of the increasing role of women in the workforce, and also in politics, for global investment? The resources within this collection address both sides that are commonly heard within the globalization debate, both those who say that it's a net positive for every country involved, and then those who recognize that there are countries that experience negative consequences of globalization, and that those countries tend to be lesser developed nations. The collection also includes a series of geographic resources, a story map looking at the history and the future of the Silk Road, and then also a website from the World Trade Organization that allows you to map some common trade data and then zoom in on individual countries to take a more in-depth look at the statistics. I hope that you find the collection informative and useful, and I also hope that it stimulates some thought about what the future of globalization is post-COVID. Given the logistical challenges that our global economy presented and our interconnections created in 2020, what is the future of globalization? Are countries going to stay so interconnected and dependent on one another, or will they turn inward, focusing more on domestic production and thereby reducing global trade flows? I look forward to your comments and would appreciate your feedback.
